The Afghan Community of Erie, representing 207 Afghan families, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent violent crime allegedly committed by Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal. The community expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended prayers for the full recovery of the two injured National Guardsmen.

In a public statement, community leaders emphasized their respect and gratitude for the service of National Guardsmen, calling them “protectors of the people” who risk their lives to ensure public safety. “We salute their service, honor their commitment, and believe they should be protected at all costs,” the statement read.

The Afghan community reaffirmed its appreciation for the United States, noting the opportunities provided to rebuild lives in safety. Leaders stressed that the crime was the act of one individual and does not represent Afghan nationals living in the U.S. “We respect the Constitution and the laws of the United States. This country is our new home, and we are committed to honoring and protecting the dignity of its citizens,” the statement continued.

Many Afghan residents in Erie previously served alongside U.S. forces in Afghanistan, forging bonds of trust and friendship. The community pledged to preserve that trust and continue contributing positively to the region. “We have worked tirelessly to promote unity, peace, and good neighborliness within Erie. We remain committed to making a meaningful impact in the community we proudly call home,” leaders said.

The statement concluded with a message of solidarity: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by this horrifying act of violence. It does not define us, and we will continue to stand for peace and mutual respect.”
