NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Pa. (WFMZ) — Malls and stores aren’t the only spots where people spent cash on Black Friday.
69 News saw family after family come through Unangst Tree Farm to find that perfect Christmas tree.
Since the moment the farm opened to the public Friday morning, they’ve been on a roll.
“It’s become a tradition to get your tree on Black Friday,” said Roger Unangst of Unangst Tree Farm.
For families like the Kennedys, picking their tree on Black Friday is a yearly tradition.
“We just got done with a wonderful Thanksgiving and now we wanted to pick out our Christmas tree for the rest of the holiday season and get in the spirit,” said Amy Kennedy of Bethlehem.
As for what makes that perfect tree, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
“The size, everything. It can’t be too high. It’s the smell and it’s also coming out and getting it which we just love coming out and taking the real tree into the house. It’s the whole process that makes the perfect Christmas tree and then it can’t be too big because we’ve all got to gather around it,” Mark Kennedy explained.
Nick Piascik of Coopersburg likes them tall.
“I look for one that’s about 7 1/2 feet tall and pretty wide. You don’t want it to have a lot of brown spots and dead parts in the middle,” Piascik told us.
He and his family cut their own tree each year.
“I think it’s the experience of being with them and having fun and cutting it down is more important than the Christmas tree. We get home, decorate, put on some Christmas carols,” said John Piascik.
Unangst Tree Farm says they expect to sell about 8,000 Christmas trees over the next few weeks. Once you find that special fir, keep it away from heat sources and water it daily.
A watered tree should last about six weeks.
