SEPTA Trolley Tunnel closure to continue through at least Dec. 7 (updated)

November 30, 2025

UPDATE (11/30/2025): The Trolley Tunnel closure will continue through at least Sunday, Dec. 7 as additional testing of the overhead wires in the tunnel must be completed, according to the latest announcement by SEPTA. All trolleys will remain on diversion to 40th and Market during this time.

UPDATE (11/24/2025):  The Trolley Tunnel closure will continue for another week – through at least Sunday, Nov. 30 – according to a recent announcement by SEPTA.

(11/20/2025): The SEPTA Trolley Tunnel remains closed this week while crews continue repairing an overhead wire.

The problems with the wire began in October, soon after new “sliders” (the part that connects the trolley to the overhead wire) were installed on most trolleys. Outages in the tunnel caused some 450 passengers to be evacuated.

The tunnel was closed at least twice this month, with the latest closure beginning on November 13th. Although the new sliders were removed and replaced by the old ones, the problems with overhead infrastructure continued, according to a recent report by SEPTA.

The current tunnel closure is expected to continue at least until next week as SEPTA crews continue working around the clock to fix some persistent issues with the overhead wire. While the tunnel remains closed, trolleys will be diverted to 40th and Market where passengers can board the L Line (formerly Market-Frankford).

“We recognize that this ongoing closure poses a significant inconvenience for our customers,” SEPTA posted on its website. “We are acting out of an abundance of caution to ensure the tunnel is safe to reopen for service. This closure is unrelated to planned preventative maintenance work that took place this summer during the annual trolley tunnel blitz.”
