December is here already? How did that happen? What a whirlwind year and what better way to wrap it up than with an explosive month of live music, holiday cheer and revelry. And no matter your taste, this holiday season has something for you.

From the Eric Mintel Quartet with an evening of Charlie Brown Christmas jazz to the R&B sounds of Gladys Knight, from seminal New York hardcore band Agnostic Front to the holiday rock opera of Wizards of Winter, music in the Valley is heating things up for the winter ahead.

Gladys Knight

In 1996 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Pips.

Meet the band: The Kennedys are a folk rock/Americana husband and wife duo based in New York who met in 1992 while touring as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra. Their live shows incorporate acoustic and electric guitar, electric sitar, bass, mandolin, and ukulele, while integrating elements of country, folk, bluegrass, Western and pop melodies into one finely thought-out package. Since their start as The Kennedys in 1995 they’ve released 16 albums earning them multiple accolades.

Honors: One of six winners of the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1984, John Gorka has released 14 studio albums and continues to tour Europe and North America. He got his start at Godfrey Daniels with the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band and has played with artists like Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, Michael Manring, Christine Lavin, Dave Van Ronk, Cliff Eberhardt, David Massengill, Frank Christian and Antje Duvekot. He also was a part of the supergroup Red Horse with Eliza Gilkyson and Lucy Kaplansky.

Meet the band: Crowned “the godfathers of hardcore,” by fans and fellow artists, Agnostic Front is a hardcore punk band from New York City. Formed in 1982, the band is considered one of the most influential bands on the popular genre. Alongside groups like Warzone and Sick of it All, they pioneered an unyielding hardcore street punk sound that bands still use as a formula to this day. Combining classic punk, hardcore and thrash into one aggressive force, AF continues touring and releasing albums 40 years after its inception, with no signs of slowing down.

The Wizards of Winter

Honors: The band started in 2010 as a way to raise money for a local food pantry and has since flowered into a touring holiday rock opera crossing the nation every year. The Wizards of Winter features members of Ted Nugent’s band, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, The Alice Cooper Band, Def Leppard, Rainbow, Blue Oyster Cult and more. They’ve released four albums and donate to charities like Tunnels to Tower and Backpack Friends. Experience “The Christmas Dream” as they perform emotive rock ballads and prog-metal anthems in the holiday spirit.

He’s been playing piano for most of his life, has been featured on NPR’s “Piano Jazz,” and is in regular rotation on XM and Sirius radio. The Eric Mintel Quartet has been together for over 20 years and their holiday concert tours, featuring the music from A Charlie Brown Christmas, are an unforgettable annual tradition bringing the holiday spirit to families across the country.

Meet the band: New York City gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello fuses punk rock, Eastern European folk and cabaret into one high-energy sound. Founded in 1999 and led by Ukrainian-born refugee, Eugene Hütz, the band is known for their raucous live performances and politically charged lyricism.
