Finals season is coming up, and you deserve a break. There are many things to do in and around Pittsburgh for the holiday season to give your brain some rest. Finals season is a stressful time, and sometimes all you need is holiday joy — I know I love to go out and take a break during this season.
One thing you can do is go to Phipps Conservatory. Pitt students get in for free, which is something you should take advantage of. The “Phipps Holiday Magic” presentation opened on Nov. 14 and ends on Jan. 4. There are plenty of beautiful poinsettias, glowing orbs, icebergs and other gorgeous lights throughout Phipps.
I have been to Phipps plenty of times, but I have only been once for the Holiday Magic show. I went last January at night, and it was perfect. I highly recommend seeing the holiday lights during the evening — Phipps is typically open until 10 or 11 p.m. Phipps also has a new main exhibit called “Garden Railroad: The Age of Dinosaurs,” — a display I still need to check out.
Peoples Gas Christmas Market in downtown Pittsburgh is also a staple. Located at 7th Street and Penn Ave, there are cute shops, good food and ice skating. The market started on Nov. 21 and ends on Dec. 24, so make sure you make it within that time frame. It is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., though they do have other specific special hours that you can find on their website. They also have a vendor directory, and some of my favorites include the jewelry stands, ornament stands, food stands and more. I love trinkets, so this Christmas market always has me spending my money — I remind myself that it’s always good to treat yourself during finals season. We all need it!
If you do not want to go ice skating downtown, there is also ice skating in Schenley Park. They offer theme nights on some occasions, like Disco Night and Valentine’s On Ice. Schenley Park is great to walk around in during any season, but it seems extra special in the winter when you’re bundled up!
I am hoping we get a lot of snow this winter. If you love snow, I recommend sledding down Flagstaff Hill. It is the perfect spot to hang out with friends during any season.
The Harmony PA Christmas Market has already happened, but it is very cute if you want to drive 30 minutes out of the City next year to see some great vendors. This year it occurred on Nov. 8 and 9. The food was delicious and there were so many awesome items to buy!
Overall, there are plenty of things to do in and around Pittsburgh during the holiday season. You should definitely give these activities a try if you have a chance.
