CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Deer rifle season in Pennsylvania has seen a significant change this year, allowing hunters to venture out on Sundays. Mark Scott, who traveled from Texas, bagged a five-point buck on Sunday.

However, he emphasized that the camaraderie with friends, like his longtime buddy Mike Akers, is the true highlight of the hunt. “We’ve been friends for close to 40 years,” Scott said.

Akers, a Johnstown deer hunter, noted the importance of safety, especially with younger hunters in the group. “We actually walk the entire property and we go place to place where people are going to be,” he said, stressing the seriousness with which they approach safety.

After a successful hunt, Akers and Scott decided to donate the deer meat instead of taking it back to Texas. “There’s a lot of hungry folks out there right now,” Akers said. “This will go right into help feeding needy people.”

Despite the joy of hunting, Akers expressed mixed feelings about the new Saturday start date for the season. “I’m a traditionalist. I personally like the Monday hunting,” he said, acknowledging the potential impact on small businesses in the Northeast. However, he also recognized that the change offers more opportunities for hunters like Scott, who flew in for the weekend.
