Due to this morning’s snowstorm, PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on several area roads.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph onInterstates 78, 22, 80, 81, 380 and 33.

The snow began falling about 7 a.m. in the Reading area. With temperatures hovering at or below 32 degrees, it quickly accumulated. Roads were soon snow-covered and slippery in spots.

PennDOT officials said about 8 a.m. today that while crews have been treating roads, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable. The surfaces will not completely free of ice and snow during a storm.

PennDOT will continue to treat roads throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear, officials said.

The snow is expected to give way to rain late in the morning.

Most schools in Berks have closed for the day, although a few are having virtual instruction.
