PennDOT has provided updated information about the travel restrictions that were imposed on Tuesday morning.

All tier restrictions have been lifted by PennDOT in the region. Earlier, speed restrictions on Interstates 80, 81, 84, and 380 were imposed.

In Lackawanna County, Route 11 in Scranton from Davis Street to Warner Street is now open. It was closed on Tuesday due to a downed utility.

Interstate 81 northbound and southbound between Exit 143 (Hazleton/Route 924) and Exit 141 (Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Beltway) will have lane restrictions and possible rolling shutdowns or traffic stoppages on Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. to adjust overhead aerial wires, weather permitting.

PennDOT is still treating roadways in the area and will continue until roads are clear.

Motorists should always allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks. Also, for their own safety and the safety of plow operators, motorists should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials.

PennDOT reminds motorists to pack an emergency kit for their vehicles. A basic kit should include non-perishable food, water, a blanket, a small shovel and warm clothes. When preparing an emergency kit, motorists should account for the special needs of passengers, such as baby food, pet supplies or medications, and pack accordingly.

Originally reported

On Tuesday morning, PennDOT District 4 announced reduced speed limits on several area roadways. This move was made due to the severity of the winter storm affecting much of Northeast Pennsylvania.

PennDOT urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, but for those who needed to drive somewhere, reduced speed limits of 45 miles per hour on the following highways were announced:

• Interstate 80 in Luzerne County.

• Interstate 81 in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Susquehanna Counties.

• Interstate 84 in Lackawanna, Pike, and Wayne Counties.

• Interstate 380 in Lackawanna and Wayne Counties.

In addition, PennDot announced Route 11 from Davis Street to Warner Street in Scranton is closed due to a downed utility. It is expected to reopen at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

PennDOT also said in Tuesday morning’s press release that crews have been treating roadways, and the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable. However, they will not be completely free of ice and snow, so drivers should remain cautious when on the roads.
