BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two local high school alumni are being celebrated for a breakthrough in sports safety.

Liberty High School grads Joseph Barlow and Sid Tekumalla were awarded a U.S. patent for their baseball helmet safety technology.

The design involves a nylon, honeycomb-shaped structure that gets secured inside helmets and is meant to absorb impact.

The structure can also recover most of its shape, which means it can be safely re-used.

The assistant superintendent of the Bethlehem Area School District commended the pair’s achievement.
