ALLENTOWN, Pa. – All the coats we collected this year from you, our generous viewers who came out for the WFMZ Coat Drive, went to good use.

The Salvation Army distributed coats on Wednesday to more than a thousand families in Allentown, trying to make sure everyone stays warm this winter. People lined up down the block outside the Salvation Army just before 10 a.m. Janelle Hamsher was there with her partner and two kids.

“Right now, we’re in a hardship. We’re not able to get ourselves jackets. So them helping us out with jackets for all of ours will help us out a lot,” said Hamsher.

What would really help out is if they had coats for the little guys in the right size.

“If I can get a bigger size than this for both of them, or just like a regular jacket for them. Anything will help,” said Hamsher.

Inside, more than 1,000 coats were waiting for them to get bagged up and taken home to keep people warm.

“I’m thankful for Allentown, for what they’re doing for us,” said one woman receiving coats.

And it wasn’t just coats. Elsamarie King was there, donating baby clothes.

“We’ve been coming here for about four years now to donate my kids’ clothes. So they’re gently used clothes that we donate every year,” said King.

Several volunteers donated their time to help with the distribution. Jessenia Dominguez said it’s worth it to have a positive impact on the lives of people in her community.

“They get so happy, and it’s so comforting that, you don’t have a jacket for your kids, for your husband, for your neighbor, for your spouse. It comes in handy,” said Dominguez.

WFMZ collected more than 13 hundred coats in the coat drive, and it’s a good thing too, because they’re needed.

“How many people do you anticipate coming through here today?” asked reporter Rob Manch.

“More than a thousand. We hope to meet the need. We hope to run out of coats,” said Corps Officer Ismael Correa.

One of those coats will be keeping Hamsher’s baby warm this winter.

“Much appreciated huh?” asked reporter Rob Manch.

“Yeah very much,” said Hamsher.

If there are any coats left over from Wednesday’s distribution, the Salvation Army is going to put them out on a rack in front of the building for anyone to come pick up.
