Emma Coleman totaled 20 points and four steals as Abington Heights overcame a slow start to defeat Holy Redeemer in its season opener, 46-34, in a nonconference girls basketball game Wednesday night.
The Lady Comets, ranked No. 3 in the Times-Tribune preseason Top 10, trailed after one quarter, 7-1. But with Abby Schneider scoring eight points in the second quarter, Abington Heights outscored Holy Redeemer, 19-9, to take a 20-16 halftime lead.
Coleman then had 16 of her points in the second half to help the Lady Comets pull away.
McKenzie Chimock led the Lady Royals (2-1) with 13 points.
Riverside 48, Wyoming Area 18: At Riverside, Caitie Beecham hit five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points as the host Lady Vikes downed Wyoming Area in a nonconference matchup.
Faith Pavalonis added 14 points, 12 of which came in the second quarter when Riverside (2-1) outscored Wyoming Area, 17-3, to open a 26-9 halftime lead.
Jailyn Park led Wyoming Area (1-2) with 10 points.
Blue Ridge 64, Greene, N.Y. 37: At Greene, New York, Abi Gelinger pumped in 31 points to lead Blue Ridge and give coach Ian Gelinger a win in his debut.
Abi Gelinger had 12 of her points in the first quarter, including three 3-pointers, to help the Lady Raiders (1–0) jump out to a 19-4 lead. She also had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Lynndee Barbour added 16 points for Blue Ridge and Melodie Bloomer grabbed 12 rebounds.
Wyoming Seminary 61, Old Forge 38: At Wyoming Seminary, Ella Stambaugh led three Wyoming Seminary players in double figures with 24 points to lead the Blue Knights to a nonleague win.
Ellie Kersey added 12 points for Wyoming Seminary, while Stella Ruiz scored 11.
Mia Fox and Miranda Lohman each scored nine points for Old Forge (0-1).
Wilkes-Barre Area 36, Forest City 33: At The Den, Wilkes-Barre Area jumped out to a seven-point lead after one quarter, and had to withstand a Forest City rally in the fourth for the victory.
The Foresters outscored the Wolfpack by five in the fourth, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Jaida Underwood scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to pace Wilkes-Barre Area.
Kayla Pecko led Forest City (0-1) with 11 points. Claire Lombardi and Sophia Lombardi each had nine points.
Girls swimming
Elizabeth Bailey won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free to lead Delaware Valley to a 138-32 win over West Scranton in a Lackawanna League girls swimming meet.
Megan O’Connell added wins in the 100 fly and 100 back for the Lady Warriors, who took first place in every event.

Ryan O’Connell took first place in the 50 free and the 100 free, and was a member of two winning relays and led Delaware Valley to a 120-66 win in a Lackawanna League boys swimming meet.
