Cash Roe scored 17 points as Valley View upset No. 1 Holy Cross, 56-46, in a nonleague boys basketball game Friday night.

Valley View, which started the season needing to replace all five starters from a team that won the District 2 Class 4A championship and reached the PIAA Class 4A semifinals, improved to 2-0.

“This is a really big win to give the kids to give them some confidence to build on,” Valley View coach Mike Kurpis said. “Our seniors, who played roles for us last season during that run, saw that level of play, and we are relying heavily on them. Cash Roe, a sophomore, played out of this world.”

Jagger Roe, Noah Symuleski, and Cash Roe each scored four points in the third quarter, when the Cougars outscored Holy Cross 15-8 to seize control of the game. It is the fourth year in a row that Valley View has beaten Holy Cross, which came off a 66-36 win over Fannie Lou Hamer of Brooklyn, New York, last Saturday.

“It is something for these guys to keep in the backs of their minds that when they play well, they can play with the best teams in the area,” Kurpis said. “They know that it is their turn now, and if they continue to buy in and work, there could be big things ahead.”

Symuleski finished with 12 points and Aiden Plotkin had 10 for the Cougars.

Adam Badyrka scored 33 points for Holy Cross (1-1).

Cathedral Prep 92, Scranton Prep 86: Michael Thompson scored 28 points and Nando Mirarchi scored 17 of his 25 points in the first half to lead the Ramblers to a win in the North Catholic Tip-off Tournament in western Pennsylvania.

Charlie Skoff finished with 12 points for the Cavaliers (0-1), who play Devon Prep on Saturday at 2 p.m.
