AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo City Council held its first reading of an ordinance considering the rezoning of Kids Inc. land.
The ordinance would rezone nearly 200 acres of land that will hold the new Kids Inc. Rockrose Sports Park and other commercial businesses.
“I think just floating any idea out there of an entity that we’d love to see here that would go with fun and family, and kind of that experience of what does it look like for the weekend tournament that’s hosted here in Amarillo. And so, that area of town with the Kids Inc. anchor is what that is,” said Mayor Cole Stanley for the City of Amarillo.
The property is located in South Amarillo with frontage on I-27, Sundown Lane, and Coulter.
The proposed Kids Inc. Rockrose Sports Park is around 70 acres of the property, with the rest intended for other developers.
The goal of the city plan is to create hubs for commercial and retail activity, and this property is one of the target growth areas identified.
“We’re hoping for additional hotels, restaurants, commercial, and then also on the other side of I-27 is residential. And so, all things are going well. Appreciate the developer annexing into our city and continuing to grow our city in a good direction,” said Stanley.
This was just the first reading of the ordinance; the council will need to have one more reading before it approves the rezoning.
Kids Inc. will host at least seven different sports and will include eight baseball and softball fields and 31 soccer fields.
With this addition, the remaining property is intended to be developed with entertainment and recreational businesses in mind.
