WINDSOR TWP., Pa. – A manufacturer that specializes in clad metals is closing its plant in Berks County.

Engineered Materials Solutions (EMS) has filed a WARN notice with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, indicating that it intends to permanently shutter its facility at 600 Valley Road in Windsor Township.

According to the notice, 58 employees will lose their jobs at the plant, which the company refers to as its Hamburg facility. The layoffs will begin in January 2026 and will be finalized by October 2026 at the latest, the company said.

The Massachusetts-based Engineered Materials Solutions did not provide a reason for the closure and did not immediately respond to a 69 News inquiry seeking more information.

According to its website, EMS was founded in 1916 as the General Plate Company, which made specialty clad metals for the jewelry industry. Clad metals are formed when two different metals or alloys are joined together; one example would be gold- or silver-plated jewelry.

The company expanded many times over the years, becoming Metals & Controls Corporation in 1931, and finally Engineered Materials Solutions in 2000.

It acquired the Hamburg facility – then the headquarters for Hood & Co.- in 2008. According to its website, the plant makes and assembles thermostatic bimetal parts that are used for electrical, automotive and industrial applications.

EMS also has locations in Colorado Springs, Co., as well as oversees in China.
