The City of Erie Department of Public Works and Bureau of Streets have begun use of a Real-time Pavement Performance Analytics and Automated Sign detection system that uses sensors on 16 City vehicles to collect data, analyze, and evaluate road pavement and sign conditions throughout the city.Â
This system will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of Bureau of Streets crews by eliminating the weeks that employees spend each spring manually identifying, monitoring, analyzing, evaluating, and prioritizing the roads for paving and sign replacement.
These reports will help identify paving priorities for the year, recommend the most effective paving treatments for each road, and evaluate the conditions of street signs. The faster the road evaluation can be completed, the faster paving can begin, and more roads can be paved before the winter season.
The new system was funded by a $51,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), Community and Economic Assistance Program (CEAP), supported by Pennsylvania State Senator Dan Laughlin, and Pennsylvania State Representatives Pat Harkins and Bob Merski.
