A winter weather system will bring several inches of snow and gusty winds to northern Pennsylvania Wednesday, while southern areas will see a mix of rain and snow.

The storm follows frigid temperatures that dropped as low as 12 degrees below zero in parts of McKean County early Tuesday.

It was 13 degrees in Harrisburg at 7 a.m. The high temperature Tuesday is supposed to be 31.

The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories for northern Pennsylvania counties from early morning through 10 p.m. Wednesday. Snow accumulations of three to six inches are expected across the northern mountains, with the heaviest snowfall likely during late morning and early afternoon.

Central and southern ridge areas can expect one to two inches of snow, with locally higher amounts up to three inches possible near the Interstate 80 corridor.

The Lower Susquehanna Valley may experience a brief period of freezing rain Wednesday morning before transitioning to rain as temperatures rise into the mid-30s.

Strong southerly winds will develop ahead of the approaching storm system, with gusts reaching 20 to 25 mph Tuesday.

Another winter weather system is expected to arrive Friday night into Saturday. Temperatures will remain below seasonal averages heading into mid-December.
