The United Way of Berks County held a time capsule ceremony on Monday as it nears the completion of its 100th anniversary year.

The event at Gring’s Mill Recreation Area in Spring Township featured United Way leadership, organization supporters and Berks County officials.

In the spring, a white oak tree was donated by New Castle Lawn and Landscape, Cumru Township, and planted as a symbol of growth and hope to reflect the values of United Way. It also honored the memory of Irv Evans, one of the organization’s longest-serving volunteers.

Organizers said the time capsule was buried at the base of the tree to honor the United Way’s legacy and to invite future generations to carry forward its spirit of service and unity. Mementos and cards sharing messages, advice and United Way memories from staff and volunteers were placed inside the capsule.
