MENTOR-ON-THE-LAKE, Ohio (WOIO) – A woman fleeing from police jumped into Lake Erie Tuesday morning and a Mentor-on-the-Lake officer followed her in the frigid water and pulled her to safety.
A second Mentor-on-the-Lake officer was injured after slipping on icy rocks trying to rescue her.
The woman, whose name is not being released, is being treated at a local hospital.
Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Chief John Forsythe said the officers are also recovering well.
According to Chief Forsythe, officers received two calls Tuesday morning about a woman knocking on resident’s doors and trying to open one of them.
When officers found the woman sitting in her car, she fled the scene, and drove to a park at the north end of the city.
She then jumped out of her car and ran into the lake, said Chief Forsythe.
Chief Forsythe added the incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
