Beverly Lucille (Said) Hoyt was born on May 14, 1930, in Garnett, Kansas to Clifford W. and Marjorie M. Said. She graduated from Bayard High School in Bayard, Iowa, and attended Drake University. On June 15, 1949, she was united in marriage to Glen Arthur Hoyt, and together they raised six children on the family farm southwest of Scranton.
Beverly was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson, and previously of the United Methodist Church in Scranton, where she served as Church Secretary for 34 years, retiring in 2005. She was also a certified lay speaker and held numerous leadership positions at the local, district, and conference levels. Her Christian faith guided her life and shaped a legacy for her family and many others.
She and Glen opened their home to students and friends from around the world, including participants in the Friendly Town program in the 1960s; the Williams College at Home program in the 1970s; and International Students through Iowa State University. They also helped sponsor refugees coming to Iowa from Vietnam. Through those experiences they formed lifelong friendships. Beverly loved music and enjoyed singing in various settings, and she passed that love of music on to her family. She cherished time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In 2012, Beverly and Glen moved to Jefferson from the farm, where they lived on Sunset Road before moving to The Gardens Assisted Living in 2018. She valued the friendships she made there and the care she received. The family is also grateful for the compassionate care she received while at Extended Care at the Greene County Medical Center in her final weeks.
Beverly is survived by her six children: Cheryl Nailor of Jefferson; Dennis (Connie) Hoyt of Quincy, IL; Linda (Tim) Lindeen of Dayton, MN; Gary (Melanie) Hoyt of Ankeny; David (Rosemary) Hoyt of Jefferson; and Nancy (Kelly) Anderson of Ames; as well as 18 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren; and brothers-in-law Dale (Linda) Hoyt, Neal (Caroline) Hoyt and Ron Carroll; and sister-in law Gaye (Larry) Barr.
She was preceded in death by Glen, her husband of 69 years; her parents; brother Clifford E. Said and his wife, Millie; sister Shirley Hoyt and her husband, Ralph; sister-in-law Arlene Carroll; sister-in-law Clara Haack and her husband, John (Jack); and her son-in-law, Roger Nailor.
The family expresses their gratitude to the staff at The Gardens, Extended Care at the Greene County Medical Center, and UnityPoint Hospice for their kind and attentive care. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson or Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson.
