Despite battling the flu and dealing with a little leftover illness on stage, Cornelius “Chevy” Chase, the star of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and other classic comedy movies made an appearance in Erie on Dec. 8.
Chase and his wife, Jayni Chase, received a standing ovation from an Erie crowd of 1,500 people at the Warner Theatre at 811 State St., after the audience watched a showing of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”
Chase then participated in a question-and-answer segment with fan-submitted questions.
“But I’m getting better and doing better now that I’m here,” Chase said after his wife stated that he had been battling the flu.

The stage was set on Dec. 8 for actor and comedian Chevy Chase as he was set to take part in a question-and-answer segment following a showing of the Christmas comedy ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.’
A fan-submitted question-and-answer segment
While sitting on stage at the Warner, Chase was asked questions by Tony Deyo, a comedian known for his “Racoon Mafia” special on YouTube.
Those questions were submitted by fans through the website pollev.com.
Some of the questions were based off of the “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” film, others focused on other films in Chase’s career including “Caddy Shack,” “Spies Like us,” and “The Three Amigos.” Chase answered questions for more than an hour at the event.
It helped the 82-year-old comedic actor to have his wife by his side to guide him through a few answers, jogging his memory about films and experiences.
A common thread that Chase presented during the segment was his ability to improv, as many of his scenes in different films involved coming up with material on the spot.
