Dec. 21 marks the winter solstice—the shortest day and longest night of the year.
The solstice holds the moment when the Sun reaches its lowest point in the sky, after which daylight begins to increase. Historically, cultures have seen this event as the “return of the light.” With it comes the idea of rebirth, hope, and renewal, and some Philly locales are celebrating with community events.
Glen Foerd
Located along the Delaware River, Glen Foerd will feature afternoon activities on the solstice from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Activities span your choice of a guided nature walk with naturalist Mike Weilbacher, a yin-style yoga session led by Melissa Gyuraki, or family-friendly creative crafts facilitated by Glen Foerd’s Lily P.A.D.S. educators (all beginning at 3:15 p.m.)
The walk will explore the science and cultural traditions of the solstice, as well as the seasonal changes occurring across Glen Foerd’s landscape, while the yoga class will take place inside the mansion, with a focus on “reflection, grounding and welcoming the return of sunlight.” The activity offers a chance to decorate lanterns, and the evening will then conclude with complimentary hot drinks, light refreshments and a sunset bonfire along the water.
Registration for the event is required, and the program is offered on a pay-what-you-wish basis, with suggested options of $5, $10 or $15.
Wilder
Those looking to celebrate a different way can also book a spot for a Winter Solstice Dinner at Wilder (2009 Sansom St.) The Rittenhouse Square hotspot will be serving up a five-course dinner in their private dining room on Dec. 21, which will be solely lit by Mithras candles. Dishes span a radicchio and frisee salad, roasted striped bass, herb-roasted boar loin, honey cake and more. Beverage Manager Tom Brander will also be serving special solstice drinks, including spirited and non-alcoholic cocktails, to mark the celestial event.
The price includes the food, tax and gratuity, as well as a special golden beeswax Mithras candle. Tickets are $125 and available via Resy.
Gorgas Park Luminary Path
There’s also the Gorgas Park Luminary Path in Roxborough (6300 Ridge Avenue), which holds great options for families. The seasonal event features luminaries (lighted decorations) peppered throughout the park offering a colorful way to celebrate the solstice. The space also includes all-ages activities and treats for kids. The Luminary Path is free to attend. Admission to the broader holiday festival is at no charge; only food, drinks, and shopping (if any) are pay-as-you-go.
