ERIE — The Corry varsity girls basketball team was back on the road Thursday night at the Hagerty Family Events Center to take on the Cathedral Prep Ramblers. The Ramblers strong three point shooting proved too much for the Beavers to keep pace, and they came up short 23-60.
Head Coach Ryan Mumau acknowledged Prep’s impressive shooting.
“The Ramblers shot phenomenally from beyond the arc,” Mumau said. “They are a tough team.”
The first quarter was all Ramblers. They jumped out to a 10-0 run before the Beavers could crack the scoreboard. Corry struggled to keep Prep’s offense in check and fell behind 6-23 at the end of the first quarter.
Prep picked up where they left off offensively in the second quarter. The Beavers were unable to provide an answer to the Ramblers shooting and were once again held the single digits in the quarter. Prep pushed their lead to over twenty and the Beavers went into the locker room down 13-37.
The Ramblers didn’t lose any of their momentum coming out of halftime. They put up another 19 points in the third quarter and held the Beavers to single digits once again. Corry went into the fourth quarter of play trailing 18-56.
The fourth quarter was a low-scoring affair with the two teams combing for just nine points. While the Beavers preventing the Ramblers from expanding their lead any further, they were unable to mount a comeback.
Ava West led the way offensively for the Beavers with 13 points. Grace Allen and Haley Mumau contributed with three points each and Regan Kemp and Madi Leofsky each had two.
Allen finished with four assists and Nickerson had one.
At the rim, Kemp finished with a team-high five rebounds. Allen finished with three rebounds, Mumau and West each had two and Nickerson and Leofsky each had one.
Defensively, West led in steals with two. Nickerson. Allen, Kemp and Mumau all recorded one each.
Despite falling short on the scoreboard, the coach praised the team’s energy throughout the match even when it wasn’t going their way.
“I thought we played a full four quarters with great energy and effort,” Mumau said.
The Lady Beavers are back in action today at North East. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m.
