BETHLEHEM, PA.— In a news release on Tuesday, December 16, the Lehigh Valley News reported that hundreds of light geese have died at a lower Nazareth Township quarry, likely from avian influenza.
The article further stated:
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is coordinating a response to this incident that includes safe removal, testing and disposal of these birds. “While the total number is undetermined, officials think 400 snow geese were affected.” Travis Lau, communications director with the state Game Commission, said.
“The sick birds were reported to the Game Commission on Friday,” Lau also stated.

Anyone who encounters sick or dead wild birds can report them to the state Game Commission by calling 1-833-PGC-WILD (1-833-742-9453), and any sick or dead domestic birds to the state Department of Agriculture at 717-772-2852, according to the release. (lehighvalleynews.com)
In another news release from WTAJ, Pennsylvania Game Commission officials are asking the public to report dead or sick birds by calling 1-833-PGC-WILD (this applies to Pennsylvania residents only, but residents of other states should contact their local game and fish departments if they come in contact with birds showing signs of bird flu as well.)
The infection in wild birds may present itself through neurological dysfunction like circling, head tilting and may cause birds to have difficulty flying. It’s also advised that, unless you’re hunting, to keep a safe distance from wild birds and do not handle them for any reason.

Hunters are still being encouraged to participate in the rest of the season, but to take precautions when handling and dressing birds. (WTAJ Pennsylvania)
