DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– The U.S. Secretary of Energy is traveling to Central Pennsylvania on Wednesday to discuss the Trump Administration’s energy agenda.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright is set to visit Three Mile Island, specifically the site where Constellation Energy wants to restart the Unit One reactor.

The Department of Energy’s Energy Dominance Financing Office (EDF) recently announced it closed a loan to support the 835 megawatt plant’s restart and to help lower electricity prices across the Mid-Atlantic region.

Constellation Energy announced plans to restart Unit One at TMI as part of a purchase agreement with Microsoft last year.

They said the power purchase will not only restart the Unit One reactor but will also pave the way for the launch of the Crane Clean Energy Center, which Wright plans to tour during his visit on Wednesday.

abc27 News is told that Microsoft agreed to purchase energy from the plant to match the power its data centers use with carbon-free energy.

However, the plan for the restart hasn’t been agreed upon by everyone. Residents who lived through one of TMI’s most historic events come to the site to protest a potential restart.

TMI’s reactor one was shut down in 2019 due to financial and operational issues. It is located adjacent to TMI’s Unit Two reactor, which shut down after a partial meltdown in 1979.

Secretary Wright will tour the Clean Energy Center, deliver remarks, and meet with Constellation employees sometime after 2 p.m.
