Janet Marie Santomauro
OBITUARY
Janet Marie Santomauro, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, formerly of Archbald, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Allied Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving family – just three months shy of her 90th birthday.
Janet was predeceased by her husband, Frank James Santomauro (d. April 15, 1992), her oldest son, Michael, and her sister, Mary Schemel.
Born on March 28, 1936, Janet was the eldest daughter of the late Gerald and Helen Milligan- Schemel. She graduated from Blakely High School, then pursued her passion for beauty and education by graduating from the Madame Fenwick School of Cosmetology in Scranton and The Hair Design Institute in New York City, earning both teacher and manager certifications. Janet began her career as a stylist at The Scranton Dry Goods Department Store Salon before joining the renowned Mathew & Nicholas Beauty Salon in the heart of Downtown Scranton. Her love for teaching led her to instruct at Lackawanna Beauty School, later known as Empire Beauty School. To remain close to her family, Janet opened Janets Beauty Salon and Best Cellar dress boutique, which her husband built on the same property as their home. She remained in business until 1992.
Janet was known for her integrity, compassion, free spirit and kind, loving heart, touching the lives of everyone she met. In her youth, she enjoyed water skiing and jitterbugging with cousins and friends at Newton Lake. She especially loved her first cousin, the late Judy Castellani (Peckville), who she considered a sister.
Janet is survived by her daughter, Maria (Bernie McGurl), son, Attorney Frank J. (wife Anne), and daughter, Regina Fratzola (Larry Kochis); her beloved grandchildren, Joseph and Janette Lynott, Julianna (Nick) Reisig, Rocco and Gianna Fratzola, Nicolas, Frankie, and Mia Santomauro; and great-granddaughters, Riley and Rory Reisig.
