Man in custody following police incident in East Berlin, Adams County
BERLIN. WHAT’S THE LATEST THERE, MICHAEL? WELL, JERRY, I WILL TELL YOU, IT’S BEEN A HECTIC EVENING HERE IN EAST BERLIN WITH STREETS CLOSED, ARMORED VEHICLES AND STATE POLICE SWARMING THE AREA OF KING AND ABBOTTSTOWN STREET, WHICH IS WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. AND AT THE CENTER OF IT ALL IS THIS HOME RIGHT THERE THAT YOU SEE ON THE CORNER. ALL OF THIS WORKING TOGETHER TO BE ABLE TO GET A MAN OUTSIDE OF THAT HOME. AND AFTER HOURS OF ATTEMPTING STATE POLICE WERE SUCCESSFUL AT DOING SO. NOW, I WANT YOU TO TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THIS FOOTAGE RIGHT HERE. THIS WAS AROUND 855 WHEN THE MAN INSIDE THE HOME CAME OUT ON HIS OWN. HE HAD NO WEAPONS DRAWN. HE CAME OUT PEACEFULLY AND WAS ASKED TO GO DOWN ON THE GROUND AND EVENTUALLY TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. NOW, THIS WAS AFTER HOURS OF TALKS. WE COULD HEAR POLICE ON A LOUDSPEAKER NEGOTIATING WITH THE MAN. THEY ALSO MENTIONED THE MAN’S MOTHER, SAYING SHE WAS CONCERNED FOR HIS SAFETY, AND THEY ALLUDED TO ISSUES LEADING UP TO THE INCIDENT TONIGHT, SAYING THAT EVERYBODY MAKES MISTAKES AND THAT ALL THINGS CAN BE WORKED OUT. AND WE’RE STILL WORKING TO LEARN ALL OF WHAT ACTUALLY LED UP TO THE INCIDENT. BUT STATE POLICE COULD CONFIRM THAT IT WAS A MALE IN THE HOME WITH NO ONE ELSE INSIDE. THIS WAS A TENSE TIME, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, WITH RESIDENTS LINING THE STREETS CONCERNED SAYING THAT THIS IS TRULY OUT OF THE NORM FOR THIS AREA. OBVIOUSLY IT’S STARTLING. I MEAN, I’VE LIVED IN THIS TOWN MY ENTIRE LIFE. NOTHING LIKE THIS EVER HAPPENS IN THIS SMALL TOWN LIKE I GRADUATED HERE. AND THEN I ACTUALLY MOVED RIGHT DOWN THE STREET AND DECIDED TO RAISE MY OWN FAMILY HERE, BECAUSE THIS TOWN IS SO SAFE. SO WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS, OBVIOUSLY EVERYBODY TURNS UP. AND THE POLICE VEHICLES ARE GONE. BUT AGAIN, THAT HOME AT THE CORNER WAS WHERE ALL OF THIS WAS TAKING PLACE. AND TO REITERATE, THERE WAS A LOT OF COMMOTION HERE WITH POLICE SETTING OFF A DEVICE THAT CREATED A LARGE BOOM AT ONE POINT, JUST TRYING TO GET THE MAN’S ATTENTION. BUT AGAIN, THAT MAN DID COME OUT OF THE HOME ON HIS OWN, AND A LOT OF THE RESIDENTS WE SPOKE TO TONIGHT SAY THAT THEY ARE JUST THANKFUL THAT THEY CAN REST EASY KNOWING THAT THAT COMMOTION HAS DIED DOWN.
