SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — The Scranton Police Department honored K9 Scout on Monday as the fallen police dog was escorted home for an end-of-watch service marked by solemn ceremony and widespread support from law enforcement agencies across the region.
On Monday, December 22, 2025, Scout’s remains were transported from Penn Vet to Scranton Police Headquarters. Along the route, officers from multiple jurisdictions stood in formation, creating a dignified escort that reflected the strong bond shared within the law enforcement community.
The transfer of Scout’s remains followed a formal and symbolic process. Penn Vet officials transferred Scout to Senior K9 Officer Kyle Kemp, who then transferred him to Lt. James Pappas. Lt. Pappas, a former K9 officer, delivered heartfelt remarks recognizing Scout’s service before transferring the remains to Scout’s handler, Officer Matthew Grippo.
The Scranton Fire Department also took part in the ceremony, honoring Scout with an American flag as he returned to headquarters.
Although Scout served with the Scranton Police Department for a relatively short time, department officials said his impact was significant. He was remembered for his loyalty, courage, and dedication, qualities that define the role of police K9s and the bond they share with their handlers.
Monday’s end-of-watch service served as a final tribute to Scout’s service and sacrifice, as officers and first responders came together to honor a partner who faithfully served the community.
