PLAINFIELD TWP, Pa.- The next step in the years-long back-and-forth between a landfill that wants to expand and the community that surrounds it could happen tonight.
The Plainfield Township Board of Supervisors has scheduled a special meeting for Monday, December 22. At the meeting, one of the items the board will consider is a preliminary land development plan submitted by WM (formerly known as Waste Management).
For several years, WM has been seeking to expand its Grand Central Landfill on Pen Argyl Road. In August, the board voted 3-2 to rezone about 212 acres of land to the east of the landfill from farm and forest to solid waste processing and disposal. A similar request was denied in 2020.
WM wants to use 81 acres of the land for future trash disposal. Should the preliminary land development plan advance Monday night, the next step in the process would be for WM to submit a conditional use application.
“We look forward to continuing to work with Plainfield Township through this process,” company spokesperson Adrienne Fors told 69 News, via email.
But, in just a matter of weeks, WM will have to make its case to a reshuffled board.
Next month, the five-person board of supervisors will say good-bye to two members, Ken Fairchild and Jonathan Itterly, and welcome new members Jane Mellert and Paul Levits.Â
Mellert, who previously served on the board, has been vocal in her opposition to the proposed landfill expansion. Levits, as a member of the Plainfield Township Planning Commission, previously recommended against moving forward with WM’s rezoning request.
Current Supervisors Kenneth Field, Glenn Borger and Nolan Kemmerer will remain on the board. In the 3-2 decision in August, Borger voted ‘no,’ and Field and Kemmerer voted ‘yes.’
The special meeting Monday night will be held at 6 p.m. at the Plainfield Township Fire Company at 6480 Sullivan Trail. Township supervisors will consider other business as well, including finalizing the 2026 budget.Â
