Starting at midnight on Tuesday morning, PennDOT crews will begin salting major roadways to ensure safe travel ahead of predicted winter weather, as more drivers will be hitting the road for the holidays. “If people have to go in tomorrow, we should be in pretty good shape,” said Fritzi Schreffler from PennDOT. Schreffler explained that while laying salt can be affected by rain, residual salt from a recent snowstorm should help maintain road safety.”Salt can wash away depending on how much it’s actually raining. So there is some residual salt from the last little snowstorm that we had, so that should help,” Schreffler said.Schreffler noted that more drivers are expected to hit the road tomorrow and early Wednesday, which requires preparation.”Make sure you fill up your gas tank. Make sure your windshield wiper fluid is filled up, check your windshield wipers, and check your tire pressure,” Schreffler said. She also recommended keeping an emergency kit in the trunk, stocked with items like blankets, socks, gloves, flashlights, phone chargers, and batteries. Additionally, using a GPS app can be beneficial.”Even if you know how to go to grandma’s house, if a mapping app is telling you to get off and exit early, there’s a reason for that, and I would follow that,” Schreffler said. Some residents have experienced varying traffic conditions this holiday season. Jay Reynolds, a Lancaster resident, shared his experience.”I don’t think it’s really too bad at all myself. I’ve been able to get around just fine. No. No traffic jams or long lines anywhere,” Reynolds said.Conversely, Elizabeth Simiele, another Lancaster resident, noted busier roads.”I work over here at PJ’s, and it’s always so busy trying to come into the complex, especially during the weekends,” Simiele said.Regardless of traffic conditions, Schreffler stressed the importance of safe driving during the holiday season.”Just be a responsible driver. You want everybody to be there at the table for the holiday,” Schreffler said.

LANCASTER, Pa. —

Schreffler explained that while laying salt can be affected by rain, residual salt from a recent snowstorm should help maintain road safety.

“Salt can wash away depending on how much it’s actually raining. So there is some residual salt from the last little snowstorm that we had, so that should help,” Schreffler said.

Schreffler noted that more drivers are expected to hit the road tomorrow and early Wednesday, which requires preparation.

“Make sure you fill up your gas tank.

Additionally, using a GPS app can be beneficial.

“Even if you know how to go to grandma’s house, if a mapping app is telling you to get off and exit early, there’s a reason for that, and I would follow that,” Schreffler said.

Some residents have experienced varying traffic conditions this holiday season. Jay Reynolds, a Lancaster resident, shared his experience.

“I don’t think it’s really too bad at all myself. I’ve been able to get around just fine. No. No traffic jams or long lines anywhere,” Reynolds said.

Conversely, Elizabeth Simiele, another Lancaster resident, noted busier roads.

“I work over here at PJ’s, and it’s always so busy trying to come into the complex, especially during the weekends,” Simiele said.

Regardless of traffic conditions, Schreffler stressed the importance of safe driving during the holiday season.

“Just be a responsible driver. You want everybody to be there at the table for the holiday,” Schreffler said.
