(WJET/WFXP) – A man who is currently in custody in the City of Erie may soon be extradited to New York for his alleged involvement in a murder.

On Wednesday, July 30, the Amherst Police Department released a statement regarding a death that occurred on Tuesday, July 29, on Niagara Falls Boulevard.

According to police, the death, which was originally reported as a medical emergency, was later declared a homicide following an investigation by Amherst police detectives and the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The victim was identified as a 27-year-old resident of Amherst, New York, but her identity is being withheld pending the notification of her family.

Police said their main suspect in the murder, 37-year-old Buffalo, New York, resident Daniel Negron, is currently in custody in the City of Erie.

Negron was arrested after threatening suicide at a Catholic mass on Tuesday evening.

Around 5 p.m., Erie City Police responded to St. Peter Cathedral and found Negron with a knife in his hand.

According to Deputy Chief Rick Lorah, police instructed Negron to drop the knife, but he ran off and told officers to kill him.

Negron had to be tased, and officers forcefully removed the knife from his hands as he was trying to push the knife into his own chest.

During the encounter, Negron said that he hurt his girlfriend at a hotel in Buffalo.

Negron was arrested and faces several charges, including terroristic threats, possessing an instrument of a crime and recklessly endangering another person.

He is also facing charges from the Amherst Police Department for second-degree murder for the death of his girlfriend.

The Amherst Police Department secured an arrest warrant for Negron, but he is being held in Pennsylvania pending extradition proceedings.
