Tony Battaglia scored 47 points and made 10 3-pointers to lead Scranton to a 73-51 win over Holy Cross in the third-place game of the Lynett Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament on Monday at the Lackawanna College Student Union.
Battaglia made 17 of 35 shots and went 10 of 22 on 3-pointers, while also handing out three assists for the Knights. His 47 points broke the school record of 43 points set in 2022 by Jason Shields against Wilkes-Barre Area. He also tied Shields’ school record for 3-pointers in a game.
“Coming into the game off the loss to Scranton Prep, we wanted to make a statement and build some momentum,” said Battaglia, who said he was battling a headache. “We didn’t want to lose two games in a row heading into our league game against Prep.”
The guard, who also made the 200th 3-pointer of his career, had 11 points in the first quarter and 15 in the second. He scored all 12 of his team’s points in the third and finished with nine points in the fourth.
“The rim looked like an ocean to me,” Battaglia said. “I just got into a rhythm. I had no idea that I had that many points. I was just out there playing basketball.”
Max DePietro added 11 points, Deondre Dickey had seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals, and Brady Hopkins had seven rebounds for Scranton (4-4).
Finn Kennedy scored 11 points and Colin Farrell had 10 points to lead Holy Cross (4-5).
