A Pennsylvania high school football program is in disbelief after its season was abruptly suspended on Friday after an anonymous tip was submitted about alleged hazing between players.
Wyncote (Pa.) Cheltenham is now under external investigation by the school district after the decision to suspend their season came just two hours before its senior night game against Truman.
The Cheltenham School District sent a letter to families on Friday afternoon, saying it received information given anonymously regarding alleged hazing.
“The information came to me late, which gave me limited time in terms of when I let families, the school etc know. Whenever you have any allegations of potential hazing, as a superintendent, I have to take that seriously,” Superintendent Dr. Brian Scriven said. “I had to make a hard decision based on very limited information. I have to always err on the side of caution and safety of every student.”
The Panthers are 3-5 this season, but had won back-to-back games in the past two weeks and had two more games scheduled for the regular season. Players and their families were stunned by the decision.
“This is my family. These are my brothers. I’ve been around them my whole life. I love these boys,” junior Brian Palmer-King told ABC 6 News. “Senior night — two hours. It was two hours. They cancelled it. That’s crazy.”
The season has been a difficult one for Cheltenham players. In addition to starting 1-5, their coach was relieved of his duties this summer and have not been able to play on their home field this season. The program’s stadium has been under renovation, but due to weather issues and “unavoidable delays,” nearly all of their games this season have been played away from home.
