Isaac Ryon ran for 242 yards on 10 carries and scored six touchdowns, and Tyler Jervis scored two defensive touchdowns as No. 2 Lackawanna Trail defeated Holy Cross, 53-12, in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division III game Friday night at Lion Pride Stadium.
Lackawanna Trail moved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in Division III. The Lions will play at No. 5 Riverside (8-1, 4-0) on Friday to decide the division champion.
Ryon moved to No. 2 on the Lackawanna Trail career rushing list. He has 3,813 yards and trails only Richard Jackson, who had 4,546 yards from 1998 to 2000.
This season, Ryon has 1,730 yards on 122 carries to lead the LFC. His six touchdowns give him 28 rushing touchdowns and 33 for the season.
Kevin Vincent ran for 29 yards and scored a touchdown, Chase Rutkoski threw for 137 yards and scored on a run of nine yards, and Luca Berardi had eight receptions for 125 yards to lead Holy Cross.
Jervis returned a fumble three yards for a touchdown, and added an 87-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Lions.
Lackawanna Trail limited Holy Cross to 62 yards rushing on 22 attempts.
In the first quarter, Ryon scored on runs of 18, 39, 29, and 29 yards, and Jervis had his scoop-and-score of a fumble as the Lions built a 34-0 lead.
Ryon added a 30-yard touchdown run in the second for the Lions. Vincent got Holy Cross on the board with a 5-yard touchdown run with 31 seconds remaining in the half and cut the deficit to 41-6.
In the third, Ryon added a 5-yard touchdown, and Jervis returned an interception for a score for the Lions.
Dunmore 50, Honesdale 8: Dunmore locked down the No. 3 seed for the District 2 Class 2A playoffs with its third straight convincing win.
The Bucks improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in Division III. They remain alive to win a share of the division championship. Lakeland clinched a tie for the title and plays Mid Valley, which is tied with Dunmore at 3-1.
Dunmore plays at Western Wayne in Week 10. Honesdale finishes the regular season at West Scranton on Friday.
Since a loss to Lakeland, Dunmore has outscored its opponents, 127-28.
Senior running back Ryan Mecca ran for 195 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Bucks. He has run for 415 yards and scored eight touchdowns in the last three weeks.
Gabe Duda ran for 154 yards and scored the lone touchdown for Honesdale.
Pittston Area 14, Wallenpaupack 13: The Patriots remained in the top spot for the District 2 Class 5A playoffs as John Jadus’ blocked extra point decided the battle against the Buckhorns.
Brody Spindler ran for 140 yards and scored a touchdown for Pittston Area (8-1 overall). The Patriots are ahead of Abington Heights, the defending district champions, in the power rating standings heading into Week 10.
Pittston Area has its annual showdown with Wyoming Area. Wallenpaupack finishes at Valley View.
Izzy Rodriguez had a touchdown run to give Wallenpaupack a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Spindler’s touchdown tied the game later in the first.
Pittston Area’s Lucas LoPresto scored on a 4-yard run to break a 7-7 tie in the third quarter.
Wallenpaupack, which is trying to chase down a District 2 Class 4A playoff berth, closed to within 14-13 when Mason Gonzalez hauled in a touchdown pass from Jake Rafferty in the third quarter. Jadus, however, prevented the tie by blocking the kick.
Rafferty finished with 141 yards passing, but Pittston Area’s defense kept the Buckhorns in check for much of the game. Wallenpaupack had 130 yards rushing.
