A small barn housing a horse and a few goats in the rural southern section of Spring Township was destroyed in a fire Thursday morning.

The fire in the 400 block of Gelsinger Road, near Grings Hill Road, was reported shortly after 7:30 a.m. by a resident who was passing by, said Chief Colin Hackman of Township of Spring Fire Rescue Services.

The 50-by-50-foot structure was fully aflame, and the roof had collapsed when crews arrived. The structure’s owner, who lives on the property, wasn’t aware of the fire at the time, Hackman said.

“There was a hydrant nearby, and we laid about 1,500 feet of supply hose to be able to extinguish the fire,” he said.

The horse and two goats were pulled to safety, but a third goat perished in the fire, Hackman said.

The township fire marshal arrived a few hours later to begin an investigation on the cause of the fire, but everything was iced over. He plans to resume investigating on Monday.
