A collection of warm clothing is piling up as the Greater Scranton YMCA looks to help those in need.
LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — The front lobby of the Greater Scranton YMCA in Dunmore looks more like a clothing store than a fitness facility. But the items on the racks have no price tag. Each item is labeled as free for those in need.
“It’s been a very cold winter so far, and there are so many members of our community who don’t have the clothing items they need to stay warm,” said Marketing Director Meghan Carnevale.
Donations started coming in on Monday, and bag after bag came through the doors.
“The response has been completely overwhelming and tremendous,” said Carnevale. “We are bursting at the seams with seasonal items that people have donated to help our community members who are in need.”
Chris and Paul Warchal of Nanticoke did some early spring cleaning to donate winter apparel.
“Mainly, we brought a couple of coats that are in almost new condition that we don’t use, so somebody else can,” said Chris.
Surrounded by full clothing racks, both say they are not surprised by the generosity of people from NEPA.
“The area, I believe, you know, it’s a nice area, and we take care of the people, I believe,” said Paul.
Staff say due to the overwhelming support, those looking for a warm piece of clothing can stop by anytime from now until January 14 during business hours to pick up what they need.
“The clothing will be available right in our welcome center, so as soon as you walk in, you can see it, ” said Carnevale. “Again, anyone can come. You do not have to be a YMCA member. It’s completely free of charge.”
Each piece, an extra layer someone can use for the chillier days ahead.
