A West Pittston family was displaced from their home and a firefighter was injured following a blaze that broke out in the borough late Tuesday, according to the West Pittston Fire Department.

Crews responded to 508 Luzerne Ave. around 10:20 p.m. to a report of a fire and arrived to find smoke billowing from the second-floor eaves, Fire Chief John Hood said.

The residents were home at the time but got out of the home safely, he said. Seven cats that were in the residence also survived the fire, he said.

Firefighters entered the home and ran a water line to the second floor, getting the fire under control within about 20 minutes, Hood said.

A firefighter from Avoca sustained a leg injury when he fell off a ladder during the operation, he said. That firefighter was taken to an area hospital for treatment and had been released by Wednesday afternoon, he said.

The home sustained fire damage to the bedroom where the fire broke out as well as to a hallway. The residence also had smoke and water damage on the first and second floors, he said.

The home was not a total loss but the residents were displaced and went to stay with a relative.

Hood said the fire did not appear suspicious but that its cause was under investigation by a state police fire marshal.
