Penelec is planning a power outage for Jan. 12 that will impact more than 340 customers.

This planned outage according to Penelec will be for the electricity company to upgrade its facilities for enhanced circuit reliability in the areas near Saint Vincent Hospital at 323 W. 25th St., and Erie High School at 3325 Cherry St.

Penelec representatives said that Saint Vincent Hospital will be fed by an alternate power source during the outage and will not be impacted. Erie High School will also not be impacted by this outage.

What is being updated for Penelec?

During this outage, Penelec crews will be replacing and upgrading 15 insulators on the block between Schley and Chestnut Streets. This upgrade is said to enhance service reliability for area customers.

The upgrades will address complaints about buzzing noise emitted by the current older insulators.

When will the planned Penelec power outage take place?

The planned outage is scheduled for Jan. 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

In the event of inclement weather, the planned outage will be delayed until Jan. 13 for the same time.

According to the National Weather Service office in Cleveland which handles the Erie forecast, Jan. 12 in Erie is going to be mostly cloudy with a high temperature of 33 degrees during the day.

High winds cause outage in Harborcreek

On the morning of Jan. 9, more than 1,900 Penelec customers were affected by a power outage, most likely caused by high winds.

According to the Penelec map, the outage ranged from Eight Mile Creek near Shades Beach to Dale Drive and Iroquois Avenue.
