Attorney David A. Howell
OBITUARY
Attorney David A. Howell, 84, of North Abington Township, passed away on January 5th at Geisinger Community Medical Center, IC Unit. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol Armezzani Howell.
Born in Scranton, on October 9, 1941, he was the son of the late Florence Kehrli and Esdras Howell of Clarks Summit
David graduated from Abington Heights High School in 1959 and Lehigh University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, majoring in History. While at Lehigh, he was active in sports and enjoyed playing lacrosse. David was a strong and enthusiastic supporter of Lehigh’s football team and attended all home games from graduation through 2025. He was a proud member of the Lehigh University 50 Game Club.
Following Lehigh, David graduated from Boston University School of Law in 1966. He practiced law several years in Scranton and then for decades more in Clarks Summit. David also taught Business Law at Keystone College.
David was known and loved by his many friends who appreciated his intelligence, loyalty and gregarious personality. He loved playing various cards games, skiing and cycling with his friends, though he may have enjoyed the after sports gatherings and libations even more. One of David’s proud cycling achievements was his participation in the RAG Ride event in Iowa where he biked across the state with a dear high school friend completing the ride in 5 days.
David was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his wife Carol, their son Brett, and eventually Brett’s wife Kathy. He was never happier than when he was surrounded by family and friends in social gatherings at Elk Mountain, at their cottage on Lake Winola or at Brett and Kathy’s home in Connecticut.
Later in life, David experienced serious health challenges including cancer which he beat through a life-saving stem cell transplant at Memorial Sloane Kettering, and two serious accidents, one skiing and one cycling. He bravely met and overcame each of these challenges while always maintaining his positive outlook and upbeat attitude. He was an example to others for how to handle adversity with grace.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by his son Brett Howell and his wife Kathy Rombach, Milford, CT; niece Lisa Martin and husband Darren, Wilkes Barre; nephew Keith Eckstein and wife Stephanie, Clarks Summit; nephew Ryan Armezzani, Clarks Summit; and Nephew Mark Armezzani and wife Michelle, Peckville.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Esdras Ezzy Howell, Jr. and his sister, Janice Yost.
Friends and family may pay their respects on Friday, January 16th from 5pm to 7 pm or Saturday, January 17th, 12:30pm to 3 pm at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home at 418 South State Street, Clarks Summit. A blessing service will be held at 3pm on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VFW Post 7069, 402 Winola Road, Clarks Summit, PA 18411 or Trinity Lutheran Church, 205 West Grove Street, Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
