For the second time this basketball season, there is a new team at the top of the boys’ rankings.

Scranton Prep, winners of seven straight games, handed Valley View its first loss and climbed two spots to No. 1 in the poll. The Cavaliers were also aided by Dunmore’s upset of previously top-ranked Riverside last week.

There was no change at No. 1 in the girls’ poll. Valley View secured wins over Scranton Prep and Wallenpaupack to maintain its ranking at the top with an 11-1 record.

In the boys’ poll, Scranton Prep faces an immediate challenge when it plays at rival and sixth-ranked Abington Heights in a key Division I game Tuesday night.

Abington Heights is 4-0 in league play and has won three straight since a loss to Cardinal O’Hara in a nonleague game.

Dunmore, on the strength of its win over Riverside, moved up two places to No. 2. The Bucks, whose only loss is to Scranton Prep, won three straight against Lackawanna Division II opponents by an average margin of 20.0 points.

This week, Dunmore plays at rival Holy Cross, which returned to the boys’ poll after wins over Mid Valley and Lakeland. Dunmore’s last win at Holy Cross came January 12, 2010. The Bucks defeated the Crusaders, 96-54, in the Lynett Tournament semifinals Dec. 27.

Riverside fell only to No. 3. The Vikings bounced back from their loss to Dunmore with a 30-point win over Honesdale. They also have an important Division II game Tuesday at No. 5 Old Forge in the Triboro Rivalry game.

Old Forge has won seven straight games since a loss to Valley View in mid-December.

Valley View slid to No. 4 after its loss to Scranton Prep. The Cougars start the week at home against No. 7 Delaware Valley on Tuesday. Delaware Valley defeated West Scranton and Wallenpaupack to improve to 9-3 overall and lead the District 2 Class 6A power rating standings.

Eighth-ranked Elk Lake has won eight straight and shares first place in Division III with No. 9 Susquehanna, which makes its debut in the poll. Elk Lake, the defending division champion, has two challenging home games this week against Lackawanna Trail on Tuesday and Susquehanna on Friday.

In the girls’ poll, North Pocono moved up one place to No. 2. The Lady Trojans defeated two ranked teams in Scranton Prep and Abington Heights.

Abington Heights dropped one place to No. 3 after its 11-point loss to North Pocono. The Lady Comets defeated Scranton earlier last week in their second game against a ranked opponent.

Scranton Prep stayed at No. 4 despite losses to North Pocono and Valley View. The Classics, who are 2-2 in the league, host Abington Heights in a critical Division I game Monday night.

Scranton and Dunmore share the No. 5 ranking this week. Scranton lost to Abington Heights, but defeated West Scranton in the City Rivalry Game.

Dunmore defeated Riverside and Mid Valley to run its league winning streak to 98 games. The Lady Bucks host Holy Cross on Monday and then No. 7 Honesdale on Thursday, with the potential for that game to be the 100th straight win in league play. Last season, Honesdale threatened to snap the streak in a 56-49 loss in overtime.

Delaware Valley defeated West Scranton and earned an overtime win over Wallenpaupack to remain at No. 8. The Lady Warriors play at No. 1 Valley View on Monday and will host No. 5 Scranton on Thursday this week.

No. 9 Mountain View thwarted a challenge from Elk Lake last week and remained tied for first place with Montrose in Division III. The Lady Eagles host Montrose on Monday night.

Riverside held onto the No. 10 spot in the poll. The Lady Vikes lost to the Division II co-leaders, Dunmore, 35-26, and Honesdale, 35-32, last week.
