The Scranton Area Community Foundation awarded a $15,000 grant to the United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne and Pike as part of its 2024 Fall Community Needs Grant Cycle. The funding will support initiatives focused on reducing social isolation among older adults, a growing concern across the region. This grant will bolster United Way’s ongoing efforts to connect seniors with critical resources, meaningful social opportunities and supportive services — helping them remain engaged, independent and connected to their communities. Senior isolation has been linked to serious health risks, including depression, cognitive decline and chronic illness. The United Way’s approach includes collaborative efforts with local agencies, faith-based organizations and volunteers to increase home visits, transportation options, and access to technology that can help seniors stay connected with loved ones and essential services.
