George Sonntag

OBITUARY

George Sonntag, 93, went home to the Lord, Wednesday, January 8, 2026 at Marywood Heights, Scranton.

Born in Pawtucket, RI, he was the son of the late George and Grace (McLeod) Sonntag. He attended school in Pawtucket where he received many letters for sports through high school. He went on to graduate from Bryant College where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He belonged to and was head of Alpha Theta Chi fraternity. He also was captain of the basketball team that he and his teammates started at Bryant. They went on to win many championships. He was also on their baseball team.

After graduation, he became a furniture buyer for Gladdings Department Store, Providence, RI. Several years later he became furniture buyer at The Globe Store, Scranton, PA. After many years the store closed and he became an independent furniture dealer to stores in upper NY and southern NJ. Once he stopped traveling he began part time employment as an oven man at Vince the Pizza Prince, Scranton, which turned into full time. He worked there for over two decades.

George will be remembered as a fair, even-tempered, practical man. His calm manner and dry wit were balanced by his energy, work ethic and determination. A man of his word, George could be counted upon by everyone who knew him.

George was a sports enthusiast, who loved basketball and the Yankees. As a boy, they used to hitchhike to Boston and sneak into games! He had an outstanding work ethic and loved vacations at the beaches on the East Coast and Bermuda. He loved sitting outside, was a true gentleman, family man and genuinely kind and caring human.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta, who passed 4 years ago. Also a stepson, Myles Lannak; a sister, Grace Anne; and his parents, George and Grace (McLeod) Sonntag.

He is survived by a stepson, Eric Lannak, Glenside, PA; a stepdaughter Sheila Lannak-Rabenold and her husband James, Kunkletown, PA; and two grandchildren Portia Lannak, Chicago and Alex Lannak, Philadelphia.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and nurses and Geisinger Community Medical Center and the prayers from family and friends.

Memorial visitation will be held on Friday from 10-11:30AM with a prayer service to follow at 11:30AM in the Corey Brian Strauch Funeral Home, 602 Birch Street, Scranton, PA 18505. Services by the Rev. Paul A. McDonnell, pastor of Divine Mercy Parish, Scranton.
