North Main Avenue between Marvine Avenue and Watkins Street will shut down on Tuesday and remain closed through the winter of 2026.
SCRANTON, Pa. — A busy road in Scranton will soon shut down for several months as part of a bridge project.
Crews will replace the bridge on North Main Avenue between Marvine Avenue and Watkins Street, shutting down that portion of the road beginning Tuesday, January 20. The closure is expected to last through next winter.
Originally constructed in 1900, the North Main Avenue Bridge is a 36-foot span that crosses a portion of Leggetts Creek before it reaches the Lackawanna River behind the 2700 block of North Main Avenue.

Officials say drivers should use alternate routes and avoid the 2700 block of North Main Avenue for the duration of the project. A 2.1-mile detour will be in place from Main Avenue to Parker Street and along Boulevard Avenue to reconnect with Main Avenue at Dickson Corners near NBT Bank.
Crews will also install a new traffic signal at the intersection of Boulevard Avenue and Parker Street to help accommodate additional traffic on that route.
The estimated cost of the replacement project is $6.4 million.
