BERKS COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A man has been charged in Reading after police say they found approximately 10 pounds of meth in his car.

According to a release, Reading police initiated a traffic stop on Jan. 7 for Joe Richard Jenkins, 54, who had an expired vehicle registration.

Police say Jenkins failed to stop, leading to a pursuit. Jenkins was taken into custody following the pursuit, when police say they subsequently found the drugs inside the vehicle.

The estimated street value of the meth is $227,000, according to release.

“This arrest has effectively stopped a massive flow of poison from entering our community and demonstrates the awareness and dedication of Reading Police officers working every day to combat drugs coming into the city,” the release read.

Jenkins was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and for fleeing or attempting to elude an officer.

According to his criminal docket, Jenkins did not post bail. He’s being confined in Berks County Prison and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 23.
