The Kewanee Boiler Girls avenged a holiday tournament loss earlier this month as they defeated the Erie-Prophetstown Lady Panthers 36-24 Wednesday night at Erie High School.Â
Junior Damaris Diaz and the Boiler Girls were not to be denied their third win in a row in a tough TRAC-East matchup. The junior center scored seven of the team’s 10 first-quarter points inside the paint. Â
Diaz also leads the team in rebounds.
Junior Audrey Clucas scored two long-range three-pointers in the first half. Clucas leads the team in three-pointers made and her shot led to the Boiler Girls holding a 21-10 halftime lead.Â
The third quarter was a defensive battle leading to turnovers and missed shots from both teams. At the end of third quarter, Kewanee still led, 23-13.
The fourth quarter drought ended and the Lady Panthers closed their deficit to six with under two minutes remaining. They would get no closer as the Boiler Girls received scoring production from each player leading to the final margin of victory.
Boiler Girls scoring: Diaz (16), Clucas (10), VanWinkle (5), Yepsen (4), Abernathy (1)
Kewanee is 5-1 (second place) in the Three Rivers Conference, and 13-7 overall.
The next game for the Boiler Girls is Tuesday, Jan. 20 (varsity only) at 6 p.m. in Amboy.
