GREENWICH TWP., Pa. – As a winter storm makes its way through the region, an accident involving nearly two dozen vehicles is causing major backups on I-78 near the Berks/Lehigh County line.
The crash happened this morning in the westbound lanes between exits #45 (Route 863/New Smithville) and #35 (Route 143/Lenhartsville.)
Initial emergency dispatches called for a multi-vehicle crash in the area.
Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) confirm that 20+ vehicles are either disabled or piled up between Exits #35 and #40.
I-78 is currently closed westbound between exits #45 and #35.
The eastbound lanes are closed at Exit #35, according to PSP.
It is not known at this time the total number of cars involved or how many people were injured.
Drivers are advised to expect delays in the area and follow posted detours.
