READING, Pa. – A man was sentenced to prison today following his conviction for a robbery and shooting that left one man dead and another injured.

Darrell Johnson received life in prison followed by 15-30 years, according to Berks County District Attorney John Adams. He was convicted of second-degree murder, robbery and aggravated assault for the August 6, 2016 killing of 28-year-old Michael Shields in Amity Township.

Shields was shot to death during an attempted robbery in the 600 block of E. Benjamin Franklin Highway. Another man, who was pistol-whipped by Johnson and injured during the altercation, survived.

Johnson met with one of the victims prior to the homicide to inquire about a dirt bike for sale. Investigators found he later returned to steal the bike, and in the process, fatally shot Shields and injured the other victim.

He was not charged with the crime until 2023.
