PORT CLINTON (WJW) — A rare slice of paradise has hit the market in Northeast Ohio.
Mouse Island, a secluded 7-acre private island on Lake Erie in Ottaway County, is now for sale for $5 million.
“It’s located just off the northern tip of Catawba Island. Seven acres of rich history and endless potential,” said Jon Deegan of Howard Hanna.

The property is listed by Deegan and fellow realtor Kyle Recker.
“The island is zoned for private use, meaning a buyer could build a home or build a development there,” said Recker.

With both eastern and western views of Lake Erie, Recker said the island boasts breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
“When you take your boat around it, you can see all the potential,” Recker said. “The sunrises and sunsets are one in a million.”
Mouse Island isn’t just secluded — it’s historic. The island was once owned by President Rutherford B. Hayes. According to the listing agents, there have been only two owners in the last 150 years.

“To say you own something that President Hayes once owned — that’s pretty special,” Recker said.
“The island was once home to a small cabin and a family beach, but all structures have since deteriorated, leaving the land pristine and undeveloped,” added Deegan.
There’s one more unique perk: the buyer has the right to rename the island. While it’s officially listed as Mouse Island by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names, there is a formal process to change it.
“We’ve had interested phone calls as far away as Germany,” said Deegan.
