SCRANTON, LACKWANNA CO. (WOLF) — The Scranton firefighting community is coming together to support the family of a longtime firefighter through a special fundraising raffle honoring his life and service.
A raffle is underway for a new MSA N5A “New Yorker” leather fire helmet, size large, with all proceeds benefiting the family of recently deceased Scranton firefighter Mike Hales. Tickets are priced at $20, and the winning ticket will be drawn on March 1.
Hales, a member of IAFF Local 60, dedicated 25 years to protecting the Scranton community before retiring from the fire department. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran and remained active in charitable work following his retirement. Hales participated in the “Wigs for Kids” program, growing and donating his hair to help children in need.
The raffle was originally organized after Hales was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, with the goal of helping his family manage mounting expenses. Sadly, organizers say Hales passed away before the raffle could officially begin. The effort has since shifted to supporting his family as they cope with his loss.
Firefighters and community members say the fundraiser is a way to honor Hales’ legacy of service and generosity while providing meaningful assistance to his loved ones.
Those interested in purchasing tickets are encouraged to participate both for the chance to win a handcrafted leather helmet and to help a family that gave decades of service back to the community.
