The Pittsburgh Steelers have some more competition on the open market after the Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott following their playoff loss. McDermott could also emerge as a candidate for the Steelers.
With Josh Allen at quarterback, the Bills job immediately becomes one of if not the most desirable job on the open market. Some of the early reported candidates such as their own offensive coordinator in Joe Brady point to an offensive hire, but they will go through a battery of interviews before deciding who to hire.
Buffalo is looking to get over the hump after consistent losses in the postseason. That is part of the reason they moved on from McDermott. In addition to doing that, they promoted general manager Brandon Beane.
As for the 51-year-old McDermott, he was named the Greasy Neale Award winner for the 2024 season. The honor goes to the Maxwell Football Club’s NFL Coach of the Year.
The Steelers are starting their in-person meetings this week with candidates, and it could certainly make some sense for the team to look at McDermott.
The Bills, meanwhile, will get quick to work, and while they are a week behind the Steelers, they still should have one of the more attractive jobs to coaches, who might be willing to wait.
