Scranton Prep’s talented group of swimmers had a rewarding weekend at the Ernie Shartle Invitational and are preparing for a strong finish to the regular season ahead of the important championship meets.

Eva Kaszuba, a returning All-Region selection, set a meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Shartle meet. Her winning time of 1 minute, 6.12 seconds also established a pool record at Tunkhannock High School.

A dual-sport athlete in the winter who also excels at basketball, Kaszuba’s performance ranks her 14th overall in the state for the event based on data on paswimming.com.

Last season, Kaszuba won an eighth-place medal at the PIAA Class 2A championships in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.93.

She also had a season-best time for the 50 free with a time of 26.23 as the leadoff swimmer for the 200 medley relay.

Rebecca Oakes, last season’s Times-Tribune Female Swimmer of the Year, won the 100 fly in a time of 57.41 and the 100 freestyle in 54.52.

Her winning effort and time in the 100 fly ranked her 14th in the state.

Last season, Oakes won a seventh-place medal at the state meet in the 100 fly with a time of 59.02. She also finished 10th in the 100 free with a time of 54.00.

Ella Schofield won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.12 and was second to Kaszuba in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.32). Last season, she won silver medals in the 200 IM (2:20.60) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.40) at the Les Richards Championships.

This week, Scranton Prep (4-0) has a tri-meet against Wallenpaupack and Dunmore on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Scranton.

The Classics are one of three undefeated teams in the Lackawanna League. Abington Heights (5-0) and Delaware Valley (5-0) share first place.

Record setters

Scranton Prep senior Lukas Iannone, who is headed to The College of the Holy Cross, had a record-setting day at the Shartle.

He won the 100 backstroke in a time of 53.21. That beat the record of 53.62 previously held by Lakeland’s Peter Kawash, who won the PIAA Class 2A championship in 2021.

Iannone’s time ranked 22nd overall in the state for the event.

Abington Heights had a pair of record-setters at the Shartle.

Jason Casper, a senior and last season’s Times-Tribune Male Swimmer of the Year, edged Iannone in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.97, and he broke the meet record in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.40, winning by nearly 13 seconds. Dallas’ Tommy Doran held the previous mark (4:53.93), set in 2022.

Derek Williams tied the meet record of 21.83 in the 50 free when he finished just ahead of Tunkhannock’s Kyle Kozloski (21.84) in the tightest race of the meet. Dallas graduate Maddoe Watkins shares the record with his winning time of 21.83 in 2022.

Casper and Williams teamed with Charles Voytek and Geoff Stanton to break a 30-year-old Abington Heights school record in the 200 medley relay at the Shartle Invitational with a time of 1:39.07.

The Abington Heights boys team is undefeated at 5-0 this season and shares first place with Delaware Valley. Scranton Prep is 4-0.

Abington Heights has a meet at Elk Lake (2-3) on Tuesday.

Getting going

West Scranton senior Roy Ayala had a strong week.

In a dual meet, Ayala set a pool record at the West Scranton Intermediate School in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.17. At the Shartle Invitational, he earned a gold medal in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.44 to rank him 22nd overall in the state for the event.

Ayala also won the 200 IM with a time of 2:00. 39. He finished more than six seconds ahead of Abington Heights’ Geoff Stanton.

Last season, Ayala won silver medals in the 100 breaststroke (59.17) and the 200 IM (1:57.53) at the District 2-4 Class 3A subregional championship meet. Because Williamsport’s Evan Summers, who competes as a District 4 athlete, won both races, Ayala earned the District 2 titles.

West Scranton will host Valley View on Wednesday.

That team also finished second in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:02.25. Hazleton Area won the race in 4:01.69.
